Monday, October 22nd: Athens, That Lovely Debris

(Written by Steve) I awoke early this morning as we were slowly pulling next to Cruise Terminal B in the port city of Piraeus, Greece. (There’s a song from the terrible musical “Ilya Darling” titled, “Piraeus, My Love”, but there’s not much to love here.). The skies were threatening, and seemed to be a reminder of the gray clouds hanging over Greece during this time of fiscal crisis. Being one of the major ports on the Mediterranean (not to mention one of the oldest), it’s huge. As the Equinox was being secured, two other ships came floating past us to make their way into the crowded harbor. We were at the furthest end of the port, and it would be shuttle buses again to get to the main gate. I have to admit that Athens was the port we were least enthusiastic about. Travel to Venice via Amsterdam

Our departure for this year’s trip began very smoothly. Steve and I both finished our packing well ahead of time which allowed us to go out for dinner with friends on Saturday night (10/14). We both slept well that night and got up around 7:00 on Sunday ready to finish our last minute chores and items from our travel readiness checklists. Hal and Mike picked us up at 10:00 and we were off to Sea-Tac. We said our goodbyes and encouraged them to check our blog regularly for updates on our trip… Here I must stop and interject: as I’m writing this entry for upload it is Fiday 10/20/06. We are on our first day “at sea” after spending the day in the spectacularly beautiful city of Dubrovnik, Croatia yesterday. I tried to upload a quick note yesterday to the blog using the ship’s wireless internet access but after waiting 15 minutes for the Blogspot logon page to open – at 50 cents a minute – I finally gave up. We purchased a 500 minute package which I am now seriously reconsidering. I’m writ...

Antarctica: The Last Continent (2018) - Days 3 and 4

Day 3 – Saturday, November 3rd  – Mexico City to Santiago de Chile (Steve writing) Having had to wake up at 5AM the prior day, we enjoyed sleeping in a bit this morning. When we awoke, the skies were clearer and we could now see further across the valley of the city: We headed out for breakfast to place called “Debbie & Peponne” (Campos Eliseos No. 189), about a block away in the tony Palanco district. They advertise themselves as “healthy food and bakery”, and no sooner had we been seated were we offered a selection from a cornucopia of baked goods: muffins, croissants, and such. Allan had a muffin and I had a croissant. Sorry to say, the latter was missing the delightfully flakey layers that make or breaks a good croissant. It was more akin to a Safeway-bought variety. On the plus side, the coffee was good and the service pleasant. We also ordered egg dishes, and these were done nicely. It seems one just doesn’t order coffee here and expect drip: it’s either a...
